What the law protects
- Protection from violence at home
- The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 covers physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse by a family member.
- Protection and residence orders
- A court can order the abuser to stay away, and can protect your right to live in the shared household (‘residence order’).
- Help to file
- A Protection Officer, a service provider, or a police officer can help you file. You do not need a lawyer to make the first complaint.
- Free legal aid
- A woman qualifies for free legal aid regardless of income. Call 15100 and ask for your District Legal Services Authority.
